In this News Brief from the Professional Outdoor Media Association, they explain why this upcoming Supreme Court case is so important to outdoor and sports journalism. A documentary film-maker was convicted of a felony and sentenced to over 3 years in prison for making a film about the history of pit bulls in which there was a scene about their use in hunting as "catch dogs." The 3rd Circuit overturned his convinction on appeal, but the US appealed that decision to the Supreme Court in an effort to uphold an anti-First Amendment federal law making unconstitutional to show images of "animal cruelty." If the Supreme Court overturns the 3rd Circuit and reinstates the conviction, then all sorts of hunting and fishing videography and photography is in jeopardy of prosecution.
